Cobi Jones

Place of Birth: Detroit, Michigan

Cobi Jones is a native of Detroit, Michigan. His family moved to West Lake Village, California. His great soccer years would began as a college player with the UCLA Soccer Team.

At UCLA Cobi, would lead the Bruins (Bear) to a National Championship and in 1991, he was honored as a College All-American (An honor college athletes receive for a high achievements).

After college Jones tried for the U.S. National Team, but he was cut twice because it was thought he was not ready for international competition.

Jones skills would improve and 1991, he would be a member of The U.S. Pan American team where the team won a gold medal.

In 1992, Jones would realize his dream by becoming a member of the U.S. Olympic team and then he would be chosen as a member of the 1992, U.S .National Team.

Cobi's skill as a player were recognized by other soccer organizations, and he was invited to train with Germany’s F.C. Colgne soccer club.

In 1994, Jones played in The World Cup which was held for the first time in The United States. The U.S. team lost the chance of winning the world cup after losing to very strong teams such as Brazil in the second round. The U.S. Team lost but Jones played a great game.

From his performance in The World Cup The Conventry City soccer team of The British Premier League signed Jones. His first start was a victory over Leeds 2-1.

International success continued for Jones where he scored in what many considered his biggest international goal in a victory over Nigeria in the 1995 U.S. Cup.

Jones’ greatest games were probably in the Copa American games in Urguay where he faced some of the best teams in soccer including Argentina, Mexico, Colombia and Brazil. Jones gave an assist which lead to the winning goal, beating Argentina in the semi-finals which was something that was not done before in U.S. soccer history.

After this Jones would play for The Vasco de Gama soccer club in Brazil, but it did not last long, then in 1996, he played for The Los Angeles Galaxy in Major League Soccer in The United States.

As a player in Latin America, Cobi Jones was a huge sensation and he was known as escobilón (The Swab).

Jones is the only player in MLS history to start with their inaugural (an original team that began with a sports organization) team and to retire with the same team. He retired from The Los Angeles Galaxy in 2007.

Cobi is the only player to have his number retired by a team in Major League Soccer.

As a member of The United States National Team, Jones played in the 1994,1996,1998 and 2002 World Cups.

Holds the record for most caps (international appearances) for The U.S. National Team with 154 and he was named The Best of XI (Best players in a league) at The CONCAF (International competition between the best soccer clubs in North America, Central America and the Caribbean) Gold Cup.

In 2005, he was named US Soccer athlete of the year.

Jones is married to former music executive Kim Reese and currently he is an assistant coach for The Los Angeles Galaxy.
